Pretoria - Tons of dirt, loud engines, epic stunts and crash helmets will be the order of the day at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

The iconic stadium will be transformed into a supercross track with mounds of dirt and sculpted obstacles for the Monster Energy Supercross African event.

The event will include riders from around the world, like US favourites Justin Hill and Darryn Durham, as well as riders from the Netherlands, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

These riders will be pitted against the next generation of stars and South Africa’s own bikers, as they keep fans on their toes to see who claims the African glory and title of the first SX Africa Champion.

The fierce competition will see the world's best crosstrack riders battle it out for the grand prize of $50 000 (R 545 250).

BIGGEST OF ITS KIND

“It is the first and biggest of its kind. We are really excited to be hosting such an exceptional event and hope the more than 39 000 seats at Loftus will be firmly occupied by crosstrack fanatics,” said the public relations manager of the event, Anneke du Plessis.

As much as 37 660 tons of dirt has been sculpted and moulded in preparation for the much-awaited event.

It will also feature a Freestyle Motocross segment where riders will be pushing the boundaries with their heart-stopping tricks and insane jumps.

“It’s also a great family outing, filled with high-adrenalin, energy-packed and out-of-this-world fun,” said an excited Du Plessis.

Timed practice and two qualifying heats will kick off the event at 5pm, followed by a Freestyle Motocross show. A semi-final heat, before the Last Chance Qualifier, will see the 40-rider field narrowed down to the 20-rider final race. The event’s final races will be held after sunset to allow for the full lights, pyrotechnics and racing to reach a spectacular climax.

A massive after party will round off the event.

Tickets for Monster Energy Supercross Africa are now on sale through TicketPro (www.ticketpro.co.za) and range from R150 to R350.
