Port Elizabeth - South Africa's 'first family of motorsport' has set yet another record as 14-year-old Sheldon van der Linde became the youngest driver yet to win a National saloon car race, in Round 3 of the Super Series on Saturday at Port Elizabeth's Aldo Scribante.
Van der Linde's Volkswagen Cup team-mate, local driver Daniel Rowe, made the most of as lucky draw for pole position to win race one - but it was the fight for second between Van der Linde (in only his third outing in the Polo) and Dewald Brummer that grabbed the fans' attention.
And when Brummer locked up his brakes going into a corner it was all the invitation the Gauteng youngster needed to dive through and take the place.
SUPERB DRIVE
Van der Linde drew pole position for the second race and parlayed that into a superb drive to an historic win - ironically, with Mathew Hodges who, from this season, is racing in the Masters category for drivers older than 27, in second, ahead of championship leader Rowe, whose two podium finishes gave him second overall for the day behind his teen team-mate.
Van der Linde is, of course, the younger brother of Kelvin van der Linde - former VW Cup champion, reigning international Scirocco R-Cup champion and current competitor in the ADAC GT Masters championship - and, like him, a third-generation racer after grandfather Hennie, father Shaun and uncle Etienne - each a former SA title-holder.
