Johannesburg - Ignition TV’s second season of the popular Speed Stars show will air its first episode on DStv channel 189 this Saturday, 3 September, at 7.30pm.

The launch episode will feature some of the previous season’s highlights along with some sneak previews of what’s in store in 2016.

The first celebrity head-to-head track battle, featuring comedians Dave Levinsohn and Jason Goliath, will be shown next Saturday, 10 September, and we’ll be offering prizes to readers who can predict the winner. This will be a weekly competition based on SMS entries, so stay tuned to find out how to enter in next week’s issue.

The 13-part series will continue to pit well-known South Africans against each other in Opel Adam Ss after some track day training, but for this season organisers have arranged for members of the public to take part in the competition as well. Finalists will go on to compete in the very same track challenge as the celebs in a dedicated episode later in 2016 - and the best part is that the show’s grand prize is also open to these contestants.

The overall winner after an elimination round featuring kart races, a gymkhana and Zwartkops racetrack hot laps, will not only win a Fortis watch worth almost R30 000, but will also jet off to a Michelin Pilot Sport Driving Experience overseas. This year’s destination has not yet been finalised, but last season’s winner went on to drive a Formula 4, Touring Car and Rally Car at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia.

Entry is simple:

Pitch up at one of four kart tracks around the country this Saturday and set the fastest lap time you can. The fastest four from each venue will then be flown to Gauteng (if not here already) to participate in another elimination round on Saturday 10 September, with the final four going on to feature in a dedicated Speed Stars episode to be aired on TV.

The kart tracks will include Xtreme Karting at Cedar Square and Compukart Raceway at Stoneridge Mall in Gauteng, Epic Karting at the Galleria in Durban; and Century Karting at Century City in Cape Town. You must be at least 18 to enter, and sorry racers, nobody with an MSA competition licence is eligible. This qualification event is open only on this Saturday, 3 September, so don’t miss your chance. Entry will be on a first come, first served basis, but you can score some extra track time by pre-booking with your closest track.

Go to www.speedstars.co.za for more information on the show, how to enter, and for contact details of the four kart tracks.
