Durban - One thing that sets the Durban Motor Show apart from other, perhaps glitzier, industry expos, is the sheer enthusiasm which the Kwa-Zulu petrolheads bring to their displays - especially the customs and hot rods in the individual and club section.
But even by their standards, this display is something special; meet the amazing rat rods of Frikkie Viljoen.
Ladysmith resident Viljoen has always dreamed of owning an old car, something different with a big, noisy V8 - but when his wife surprised him with a 1959 Morris Minor, he really didn't know what to do with it.
Until his next birthday, when his daughter gave him a rodding magazine, which inspired him to rebuild the two-door Jelly Mould into something really different.
TROPHY WINNER
The job took six months - not a long time by custom-car standards - and the car has been running for two years, during which time it has won the 2013 Rock Billy Festival Trophy and was voted best in show at the RedTrofest in the same year - not bad for a first effort.
Viljoen is currently working on a 1933 Plymouth, which has already had a big-inch V8 dropped into it and now needs a lot of detail work, and has an incredibly rusted but surprisingly complete late model Ford Model T (from sometime in the mid-1920s) for which he has some off-the wall ideas, lined up for when the Plymouth is done.
All three, plus another work in progress and a rat-rod motorcycle, are to be seen on Viljoen's incredibly detailed stand at the Durban Motor Show this weekend.
