It’s Quarter Mile Kings time again, when we update our rankings of the fastest cars over the standing quarter mile (402.3m).

McLaren’s 12C supercar still reigns supreme at the top of the log. But since we last published the list a few months back, we’ve had some interesting new additions, chiefly Merc’s latest SL63 AMG, which overtook its more expensive SLS sibling to become the quickest Benz we’ve yet tested.

The 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8 droptop is also now the fastest rear-wheel-driven car at 12.1 seconds, and places fifth overall behind a fleet of sportscars that get their go from all four wheels.

BMW’s new force-fed M6 Convertible, as well as Bentley’s recently launched Continental GT with V8 turbo power, also break into our elite sub-13-second bracket with equal quarter-mile times of 12.6 seconds, and Mercedes’ C63 Black Series and Porsche’s all-new 911 Carrera S fall in line just behind on 12.7, proving that naturally aspirated engines can still compete near the top in acceleration at Gauteng altitude.

A little further down the leaderboard are Porsche’s new Boxster S on 13.4, Jeep’s brutal Grand Cherokee SRT8 on 14.1, Volvo’s Nordic V60 with Polestar kit on 14.4, and Mitsubishi’s Evo X on 14.6.

Our ever-growing list contains not only the latest vehicles from 2012 but also dozens of cars we’ve tested over the past few years.

So cut it out, put it in your pocket, and bring it down to the pub for some bar-room banter.

All cars are tested by us at Pretoria’s Gerotek test facility, using Racelogic Vbox timing equipment.

To see our full list of Quarter Mile Kings, get yourself a copy of the Motoring supplement in The Star, Pretoria News, Mercury or Cape Times on 29 November.
