Madagascar - The intended target of a bomb blast which injured three people in Antananarivo on Friday night was an army officer, investigators said on Sunday without naming him.

“The bomb was planted under an army vehicle driven by an officer,” said Colonel Andry Rakotondrazaka, second in command of the mixed operational security forces in the Madagascan capital and in charge of the investigation.

“The officer parked the car in a parking space while he went into a night club,” he added, revising an earlier toll of two injured to three - a taxi driver, a journalist and a passer-by. Their injuries were said to be not life-threatening.

Prior to the blast a person was seen leaving a plastic bag under the car.

“A street child picked up the bag hoping to find food in it, but discovered an explosive device,” police said.

The bomb went off while police were waiting for the arrival of bomb disposal experts.

Investigators had not established a motive for the attack or identified who was responsible. - Sapa-AFP
