South Africa's President Jacob Zuma addresses the 66th United Nations General Assembly at the UN headquarters in New York.
New York: AU peace efforts in Libya were wrongly ignored in favour of Nato military activity in Libya, which should stop immediately, President Zuma has told the UN General Assembly.
“It is a matter of record that the AU efforts were never given a chance,” Zuma said during his annual address to the UN yesterday. “Military actions were preferred over peaceful means.”
Though South Africa voted to authorise a Nato military role to protect civilians in Libya, Zuma later charged that the UN’s mandate was used instead to help overthrow Muammar Gaddafi.
The AU would nevertheless remain engaged in helping Libya’s National Transitional Council (NTC) to form a government, Zuma said.
South Africa recognised the NTC as Libya’s new representatives on Tuesday.
“During this period of working towards normalcy in Libya, we call for a cessation of hostilities and an end to the Nato aerial bombardment,” Zuma said.

“We also call for the lifting of the no-fly zone, which was necessitated by the need for the protection of civilians.”
Nato is still taking part in operations to flush out die-hard Gaddafi supporters.
Gaddafi is still at large, wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Zuma said the spread of weapons in Libya posed a threat to the entire sub-Saharan region and had to be dealt with. He also called on the NTC to protect migrant workers, especially 2.5 million from sub-Saharan countries.
The Libyan rebels have been targeting sub-Saharan Africans for reprisals, believing them to have been mercenaries for Gaddafi.
ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo is investigating these killings.
“Immediate measures should be taken to put an end to the killings, arbitrary arrests and the detention of migrant workers and black Libyans,” Zuma said.
He also confirmed South Africa’s support for Palestine’s bid for UN state recognition.
South Africa holds one of 15 Security Council seats and would vote for Palestinian membership.
South Africa also supported “the ongoing struggle for self-determination” for Western Sahara.
Zuma reiterated South Africa’s call for a new permanent Security Council for Africa.

@Anonymous 3:50. The crime situation in SA will not improve as long as the anc are in power. I'm sure that even though you are not living in the country, you would be aware of all the crime that takes place within the government itself let alone the crime on the street. If people like you and your uncle continue to vote with your eyes closed to the current situation, wishing the anc would 'return to the old order', SA will never improve. So open you eyes, vote with you head - not your heart.

Poor Africa! Always 'left out' in everything. Get a Life Mr Prez, that speech certainly doesn't reflect all of South African opinion, only your beloved AnC's rhetoric. You need to go.

the AU holds meetings in expensive hotel conference centres. all the delegates get free food and drinks and they sit around a table merely 'talking' and taking no action. Us taxpayers have to pay for the AU luxury club while theu au openly supports dictators who murder innocent civilians. The UN is a take-no-crap organisation and removes these dictators and resotres order and the au hates them because the UN shows how pathetic and incompetent the AU is!!

You got it right nic, I remember the OAU - same old bunch of do-nothings. Now it's the AU -but the usual cast of INEFFECTUAL blusterers and whiners. Recall Rwanda when the West and Africa sat on their hands? If the AU stepped up (shuffled more likely) in Libya instead of NATO, nothing would have happened except more bloodshed. And Gaddahfi The Desert Duck would STILL be in power. JZ's whining in NY was obvious - hethey miss their Muammar.

As a South African Indian Muslim has lived and worked in many countries and is currently still abroad because of the crime situation in SA, I can say that there is no place like SA when it comes to free speech and courage to disagree with the Western powers. During the last elections I complained to an uncle of mine how disappointed I was in the ANC, but he soon reminded me that the ANC and the SA Muslim Community have an unbreakable bond and voting anywhere besides the ANC is simply not an option. I do agree! I do hope that our newyoung ANC leaders remember their history and maintain this bond. The likes of Comrade Ismail Meer and Dr Chota Motala helped form the vision and thinking of Nelson Mandela and the ANC. The ANC must realise and exploit the multiracial talentpotential that South Africans have. We need a return of the old order.Principles, honour, justice. The recklessness of the Malema and the self interests of the Logie Naidoos must go....now! We need new blood with old ideas! Viva the true ANC! Amandla Awethu! Freedom for Palestine!

We are still waiting for the AU to do something about the famine in the horn of Africa. Or the human rights situation in Zimbabwe. Or the people being murdered in Bani Walid by Ghadaffi thugs as we speak.

There is a reason why they ignored the AU. If the AU was going to determine the course of action every freedom fighters would have been murdered and the dictator would still have been in power. But then again, that sounds very much like the AU would have wanted things to be in any case.

And once again JZ783 embarrasses the country on the world platform. The AU is a morally corrupt body (oddly enough, strongly resembling the ANC) that has never managed to do a single thing right in Africa in its entire existence! It blatantly sides with dictators and tyrants and hasn't done anything to prevent the continuing genocide currently happening in so many African countries. All it is good for is having all-expenses paid parties all over the place. And then a slope-head like JZ783 punts this nonsense to the UN?
