Cairo - Two members of the Muslim Brotherhood were killed in a shootout with security forces in the Nile Delta north of Cairo, the state news agency reported on Friday.
The MENA news agency said they were part of a group that had opened fire on police on a road between the cities of Tanta and Al-Mahalla Al-Kubra in the Nile Delta province of Gharbiya.
They had also tried to set ablaze a traffic police checkpoint, according to the report, which said a third assailant had been arrested while others got away.
Attacks on police and soldiers have become commonplace since the army deposed Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood last July following mass protests against his rule.
The state has declared the Brotherhood a terrorist group. The group's leaders say it remains committed to peaceful activism.
Former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said fighting militancy was one of his priorities when he announced his candidacy for a presidential election that he is expected to win easily next month. - Reuters
