Johannesburg - Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh on Sunday condemned an attack at a restaurant popular with Westerners that killed three people and injured 15 others, including several foreigners.

Grenades were thrown at La Chaumiere restaurant in the capital on Saturday. The Djibouti Interior Ministry said the fatalities included two Somali suicide bombers, who were a man and a veiled woman.

Four of those injured were reported in serious condition.

Those injured included three Germans, who were participating in an European Union mission to fight piracy off the Somali coast, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said in Berlin. The lives of the three, who were due to be flown to Germany, were not in danger.

The attack occurred in the evening at a time when the restaurant was full, the Djibouti news agency ADI quoted an Interior Ministry statement as saying.

Security forces immediately sealed off the area. The causes of the attack were under investigation.

The Somali radical Islamist group al-Shabaab has been extending its violent campaign to neighbouring countries. Djibouti contributes troops to an African Union force fighting al-Shabaab in Somalia.

“This act of blind terrorism will not put into question our determination to fight with the international community against the plague” of terrorism, Guelleh said.
