A journalists association says two armed men followed and killed a Somali journalist a day before World Press Freedom day in what was the fifth death of a Somali journalist this year.

Mohamed Osman Hussein, the chairman of the Somali Exiled Journalists Association, confirmed the death of Farhan Abdulle in the city of Galkayo late Wednesday.

The US on Thursday called on governments to create the conditions for journalists to work without fear of violence or persecution.

The top US official to Somalia, James Swan, noted that Somali journalists in particular must work while battling government censorship and while knowing that militants or criminals may target them. – Sapa-AP
