Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe said on Thursday that Libya's Muammar Gaddafi had naively tried to make friends with the West, which later supported the rebellion against him.

"He proceeded in a quite naive way investing in America, investing big monies in Europe and thinking that he was making friends with them," Mugabe told more than 3 000 ZANU-PF supporters at a party conference in Zimbabwe's second city Bulawayo.

"NATO, that is Europe and America, killed Libyan civilians onstensibly to protect them," he said.

"Today we have a broken people, broken lives. We have to take notice and take a stance as a continental people of Africa," the 87-year-old said.

After decades of isolation, Gaddafi took strides in recent years to improve ties with West, notably meeting in 2003 with former British prime minister Tony Blair - an arch enemy of Mugabe.

Gaddafi was killed in October after being captured in Libya by forces loyal to the National Transitional Council (NTC), with NATO air support.

Mugabe, who had long-standing ties with the toppled strongman, said Zimbabwe never really benefited from Libyan investment.

"What he (Gaddafi) said he was going to do to strengthen relations was to send us some camels. So he gave some African countries some camels a year before he died.

"We got four camels which are at the farm but no real investment in Zimbabwe."

Zimbabwe expelled Libya's ambassador after he recognised the NTC as Libya's new rulers in early September.

The former ambassador had pulled down and burnt the green flag of Gaddafi's toppled regime, saying he was following the wishes of the Libyan people by backing the NTC.

Mugabe has previously accused NATO of backing the NTC in order to tap the country's oil resources. - AFP

Of ALL the leaders in the world currently - it is only Uncle BOB that has the guts to stand up to the west, the insight into their "wise decisions", and only time will prove what a true leader he ishad been. The truth SHALL DEFINITELY emerge. As AFRICANS we have not been able to free ourselves of the colonialists. As with many rich AFRICAN nations the WEST always seem to benefit from their riches and the people suffer. GOD WILL BE THE JUDGE. IT IS BETTER TO BE RIDICULED AND THOUGHT OF A FOOL THAN TO FOLLOW THE CROWD AND BE DOOMED. ALL HAIL ROBERT MUGABE.

Mugabe maybe a Devil but fact is fact we need to look at things as Africans and thats beyond political division. The fact is the west dont like Africa they only want our minerals. Those who helped the Libyan Rebels it was mainly not for the good of the Libyans they took advantage of the desperation of our african brothers. They always bring a fight between two brothers and while we fight they loot our Gold diamonds and oil.Arise Africa and let your enemies be scattered.

Senile old b*****d. His people rebelled because they were kidnapped, tortured, beaten and subdued for forty years. If Mad Bob makes it past 35 years in power without any insurrection I would be surprised. O hang on, even though he beats his people bloody, they are just as bigoted and chauvinistic as he is so it wont make much of a difference who is in charge, only the hand on the battery cable and the nuts on which the cable is placed changes.

It is better to be niaive than an arrogant dictator that does not want to give up power because he is afraid of facing the crimes against humanity that he is guilty of.
