The Hague - The International Criminal Court will hear closing statements on May 15 in the trial of two Congolese former militia leaders, the court said on Thursday.

Germain Katanga, 33, and Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui, 41, have been on trial since November 2010 for crimes against humanity and war crimes.

They are accused of murder, rape and other atrocities committed in February 2003 when their forces jointly attacked the village of Bogoro in Ituri, a mineral-rich region in the north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

More than 200 civilians died in the attack.

Katanga is also accused of enlisting child soldiers and using women as sex slaves.

Katanga led the Force for Patriotic Resistance in Ituri and Chui led the Front of Nationalists and Integrationists.

In 2003, the DR Congo was just beginning to emerge from a war that had embroiled the armies of more than six nations and the east was rife with violent militia groups. - Sapa-AFP
