Jerusalem -

Israel has returned the bodies of six gunmen, who killed 16 Egyptian border guards in the Sinai, to its Arab neighbour, Israeli public radio reported on Tuesday.

The six were sent back overnight on Monday, the radio report said.

Contacted by AFP an Israeli army spokeswoman would not immediately confirm the report.

In Sunday's attack, 35 gunmen in Bedouin clothing opened fire on Egyptian troops before crossing into the Jewish state in an armoured vehicle, Egyptian officials said.

Israel said five gunmen were killed on its side, adding that it also seized two armoured vehicles, one of which exploded while the other was destroyed by a helicopter.

Egypt's army vowed Monday to “avenge” the killings.

Egypt also closed until further notice its Rafah crossing with the Gaza Strip, the only crossing to and from the territory not controlled by Israel. - Sapa-AFP
