Lagos - Kenya Airways has paid $130 000 (about R1,1-million) in compensation to the families of 60 Nigerians killed in a plane crash last year off Ivory Coast.

The Airbus-310 crashed shortly after takeoff in Abidjan on January 30 last year, killing 169 people, mostly Nigerians on board. Ten people survived the ordeal.

On Tuesday, the Nigerian aviation ministry said the airline had compensated the crash victims.

It said the families of the 60 Nigerians, whose bodies were recovered after the crash, were paid $130 000 each.

The families whose loved ones were not found will have to wait for seven years in line with international aviation laws before they can be settled.

Officials of the Kenya Airways in Nigeria were not immediately available on Tuesday to comment on the development. - Sapa-AFP
