Libyan government forces took control of the south-eastern town of Kufra after days of clashes with gunmen loyal to former leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Libyan government forces on Tuesday took control of the south-eastern town of Kufra after days of clashes with gunmen loyal to former leader Muammar Gaddafi that killed at least seven people, a government official told dpa.

Some 20 people were also injured in the clashes that erupted on Sunday.

Libya has witnessed several battles between former rebel forces who back the interim ruling National Transitional Council and gunmen loyal to the former leader, who was captured and killed in October.

Libyans will on Friday celebrate the first anniversary of the uprising against Gaddafi, which turned into an armed conflict.

The National Transitional Council is facing demands to speed up implementation of economic, social and security reforms. – Sapa-dpa
