Johannesburg - Zambian President Edgar Lungu, who is receiving medical treatment in Johannesburg, is suffering from achalasia, a hospital source said on Friday.

Lungu underwent further tests on Thursday at the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg to determine the cause of his ailment.

“Mr Lunga’s results are encouraging. As for now we can say he’ s suffering from achalasia,” the hospital source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The source couldn’t confirm or deny allegations that the Zambian president might be flown to Pakistan for a throat surgery.

The Zambian media initially reported that the president was admitted to a hospital in Lusaka for a bout of Malaria after he collapsed on March 8.

His medical team reportedly recommended that he undergoes high-tech surgery not available in Zambia.

The Zambian president was admitted to the Milpark Hospital on Tuesday to undergo a possible surgery for a blocked windpipe, earlier reports said.

“I am feeling much better and I have been told I have high levels of fatigue and should take some rest. There is nothing to worry about,” Lungu said before going to South Africa.

Lungu is being cared for by a team of four South African and three Zambian doctors at the Milpark Hospital.

Lungu won a snap election in late January following the death of President Michael Sata in October.

Sata was Zambia’s second leader to die in office in six years.
