The United Nations gave free reign to the United States, France and the United Kingdom, known as the P3, to intervene in Libya without any evidence of war, former president Thabo Mbeki on Thursday.
“The naked reality is that the relevant organs of the UN - the Security Council and the Office of the Secretary General - elected to betray their binding obligations in terms of international law, especially as prescribed by the UN Charter,” he said in a speech prepared for delivery.
“In this context I would like to state that there is absolutely no evidence that the (Muammar) Gaddafi regime either committed or had any intention to commit any genocide or wage a war against civilians, justifying the evocation by the UN, the P3 and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) of the so-called 'right to protect'.”
Mbeki was speaking at the annual Dullah Omar Memorial Lecture at the University of the Western Cape.
He said military actions in Libya were purportedly performed to make peace, bring people out of a dictatorship and protect the people from criminal abuse by the government, especially if war crimes, ethnic cleansing and genocide occurred.
“Together with everything I have said, we must nevertheless accept that various concrete realities in Libya provided the excuse for the Western powers to intervene in the manner they did,” he said.
“Through its actions, it had earned the wrath of the major Western powers, partly informed by the conviction that Libya had carried out terrorist actions which had claimed many lives of citizens of these powers.”
Libya had not been a democratic country, and it was young military officers, led by Gaddafi that originally overthrew a feudal regime to assert the right of African people. - Sapa

It is very clear that many people, particuarly Whites, in this Forum seem to have this kneejerk reaction to President Mbeki's utterances without any regard for the facts or reality. Mbeki is very objective in his assessment of the Libyan situation. if there is one thing that has shown that Western powers can do murderous things with impunity is the p;retext they used and the manner in which they effected regime change in Libya. we admit that Muammar Gaddafi was no angel, but the lies used to wage war on Libya and pulverise that country's infrastructure were right from the pit of hell. and then they went on to arm civilians to fight against the Libyan government. Nobody can convinve me that there were immediate and urgent reasons for the western powers to launch stikes on Libya (okay except the oil ofcourse). Jacob Zuma and Maite Nkoane-Mashabane must have been fast asleep when they read through Resolution 1973. as for Jacob Zuma we should question his attention to detail and understanding of written complex matters. His feeble denials and self-defense only serve to show his lack of depth in understanding international problems.

All the opponents of the view expressed by our former president Thabo Mbeki are beneficiaries of the colonial system and apartheid who will do anything to defend the evil committed by their own kind in South Africa and worldwide. The invasion of Afghanistan,Iraq and Libya is indefensible to a fair minded person. We are now in the threshold of the new world order, and guess who will be the ruler?

The Bilderbergers also decide on who will be the next president of a country and who gets what posts in a government. They never reveal what was discussed.

To Insomnia, their meetings were always held in secret then people started protesting it, and got some press exposure, then last year they launched a website. Since then they only started revealing the attendees. Go look at www.infowars.com

This is absurd, what about all the people in Libya who were revolting against their own dictator?? Before the UN stepped in. The time for owning a country or people just because your family had the right in the past is gone. Be gone with all the dictators. Let the people govern themselves in a democratic way - regardless of the Western involvement or not. The people of these countries like Egypt, Libya, Tunisia have spoken....

@anonymous: The Bilderberg's only activity is its annual Conference. At the meetings, no resolutions are proposed, no votes taken, and no policy statements issued. Names of attendees are made available. Now, what agenda are you on about?

And, from the distant planet of Insanity, former president Mbeki has assured us Gadaffi was an all round good guy. Of course, that doesn't explain all those civilian corpses in the streets - maybe they were HIV casualties? Opps, sorry, my mistake - HIV is also a lie perpetrated by the West. So, we are now to believe that Gadaffi was a good guy, as was Bob Mugabe. HIV does not cause AIDS .... and perhaps shortly swine flu is actually caused by green horses ridden by the soldiers of the apocolypse? Thabo Mbeki is a member of a lunatic fringe. His opinions are not fit for general consumption.

Why is it that they(US) dont televise their own uprisings like Occupy Wall Street protests which goes on daily, they rather show(CNN) the propaganda on Syria and Iran. Wake up people the US is taking over the world, that WWIII is coming faster than we think.

Please post, 3rd time I am sending. Thought we had freedom of speech in S.A. Many of you people are quick to crit when you don't really know what is going on. Go and do some research and see for yourselves, google the Bilderberger group, the Council on Foreign Relations. There is an agenda here and their plans are picking up pace very fast. The New World Order is what they are pushing for. Also, the US is getting out of control, taking over all these countries and installing their own puppets as leaders. How would you like them coming in here just for the things Malema says...lol.

Possibly Mbeki's pockets were lined by Gadaffi and so, he cannot say otherwise. We need to remember that this is the man who declarde the Zim elections that were won by the MDC and hijacked by the ZANU PF as free and fair and he also denied millions of people ARV's and his denial of AIDS itself! So we need not take notice of what he says !

@Donovan, hang on a little there 'Skippy'. what you think is donations from the west to Africa is actually return on investments, you need to look at this picture from at least 200 years back and you will quickly realize that Africa has invested a lot in the western economies(directly and indirectly).

Just as well he is NOT president anymore. He is completely out of touch with reality. "Big Brother" was in the process of slaughtering his own people and one of our own photographers died tragically in the conflict. We are better off without him ............ too intellectual.

The west will collapse without Africa's resources! That's why they colonize. Europe was starving and dying of plagues when colonialism and slavery started. They depend more on the former colonies than we do!
