Rabat, Morocco - An official at a Moroccan military hospital says an army helicopter has crashed near an air base in the south of the country.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the press, declined to give a toll for Wednesday afternoon's crash or the reasons behind it.

But the online news site Lakome.com, citing medical officials, said eight were killed outright and three were treated at the Guelmim military hospital where one succumbed to his wounds.

The Moroccan government spokesman could not be reached for comment.
