Nairobi - An explosion in a predominantly Somali neighbourhood of the Kenyan capital Nairobi on Wednesday injured at least one person, police sources said.

“One person was injured when an explosive device went off in a supermarket in Eastleigh area,” Nairobi police chief Moses Nyakwama said.

Police said they suspected the explosion was caused by a grenade, adding that they had arrested the injured man and were holding him for questioning.

“The suspect was arrested when the explosive device went off at the entrance of a supermarket, injuring him. His accomplice fled the scene of the 8pm incident. We are interrogating the suspect to establish his involvement,” Nyakwama told reporters.

Ever since Kenya rolled tanks and troops into neighbouring Somalia to fight al-Qaeda-linked Islamists there, the country has been the target of a spate of explosions and shootings, many of them aimed at diverse targets that have included policemen and churches.

There were no reports of any other injuries from the Wednesday explosion. - Sapa-AFP
