Windhoek - A senior Namibian judge was arrested on Monday on a charge of raping a 10-year-old girl. It is alleged that the judge sexually assaulted the girl at his home at the weekend.

The judge has been admitted to a Windhoek state hospital under the care of a psychiatrist. He is said to be under police guard.

Police said that he would appear in court within 48 hours if he were charged with the alleged crimes - rape, attempted rape, kidnapping and supplying liquor to minors.

The judge allegedly picked up two girls, aged nine and 10, on Friday evening in the poorest area of the Katutura suburb.

He drove them to a plot outside town where he allegedly gave them liquor, fondled one girl and inserted a finger into the private parts of the other.

The children allegedly slept over at the judge's house, and he transported them back to Windhoek the next day.
