New ethnic clashes broke out on Monday in a village in southeastern Kenya, in a region that has been rocked by fighting for several weeks, police and the Kenyan Red Cross said.

“The situation is bad, as we speak now people are fighting, but our officers are there,” regional police chief Aggrey Adoli said. The Red Cross said the village was attacked by over 300 people and houses were burned.

“Clashes are ongoing and houses are on fire at Kilelengwani village in Tana Delta, after the village was attacked by more than 300 people,” the Kenyan Red Cross said in a statement.

Adoli said he had received reports of casualties but said it was too early to say how many.

“The police in collaboration with Red Cross personnel have rescued at least three people but the situation is still volatile,” the Red Cross statement went on.

The Red Cross said it has sent ambulances, paramedics and first aid teams into the village.

The attack happened in the Tarassa area of the Tana River district, close to the coast and about 300 kilometres from the capital Nairobi. - Sapa-AFP
