Lagos - A mob in Nigeria lynched four male students at the University of Port Harcourt in the southern Rivers State after accusing them of stealing phones and laptops, state police and the media said on Sunday.

“On Friday, a mob from Aluu community in Port Harcourt committed a horrendous crime of taking the law into their hands by lynching four male students of the University of Port Harcourt,” said police spokesperson Ben Ugwuegbulem.

Aluu is the nearest community to the university, established in 1975.

Media reports said the students were accused of stealing laptops and BlackBerry smartphones.

“The police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators of this barbaric, reprehensible and unlawful act. We shall not condone this illegality,” Ugwuegbulem said, calling the killings “murder”. - Sapa-AFP
