Pretoria - International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane arrived in Gaborone, Botswana, on Thursday for the launch of the SADC election observer mission, her department said.

She was representing President Jacob Zuma Ä who is the chairman of the Southern African Development Community's organ on politics, defence and security co-operation, spokesman Clayson Monyela said in a statement.

The organ is responsible for the maintenance of peace and stability in the region.

The election observer mission launch is set to take place on Friday.

Botswana will hold its general elections on October 24.

“The holding of regular democratic elections in the region is a positive development and one of the key contributors to peace, stability and development,” Nkoana-Mashabane said.
