Bamako - One person was killed and six others wounded when Malian troops clashed with members of an elite unit loyal to ousted president Amadou Toumani Toure in the capital Bamako on Friday, an officer told AFP.

“We have one dead and a half-dozen wounded,” the officer said on condition of anonymity, after troops and paramilitary police exchanged gunfire with members of the “Red Berets”, an elite unit of paratroopers loyal to the overthrown leader. A civilian living nearby said he had seen three dead, a young man and two women. - Sapa-AFP
