Ghanaian rescue workers search for survivors among the debris of a collapsed shopping mall in Accra.

Johannesburg - The South African government sent its condolences to the Republic of Ghana on Saturday after several people were killed when a building collapsed in the country.

“We extend heartfelt condolences to the government and the people of the Republic of Ghana... South Africa mourns the loss of lives during this unfortunate incident,” said spokesman for the Department of International Relations, Clayson Monyela.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the deceased and those that were injured, and we wish to express our solidarity to the government and the people of Ghana during this difficult time of mourning.”

The six-storey shopping centre collapsed in the country's capital, Accra, on Wednesday.

Media reports have placed the death toll at 18 and around 70 people had been rescued from the rubble.

Ghana's disaster management organisation blamed structural weakness for the collapse. - Sapa
