Nairobi -

At least 33 people were killed and 49 injured when an overcrowded bus crashed while travelling from Nairobi to the town of Garissa in northeastern Kenya, officials said on Wednesday.

Red Cross spokesman Peter Outa told dpa more than 80 people were on the bus, which had a maximum legal capacity of 52 passengers, when it overturned near Mwingi, about 180 kilometres from Nairobi, at around 3am (00.00 GMT).

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

“The road is not bad so it was either over-speeding or the driver just lost concentration,” police spokesman Jared Ojuok said.

Officials said it took time to rescue people trapped inside the wreckage.

Two people were in comas and 17 people were listed in critical condition at nearby hospitals, according to medics. - Sapa-dpa
