Will Robert Mugabe be in power at independence celebrations in 2014? Maybe. He will be 90 then.

Harare - Zimbabwe's veteran president Robert Mugabe cast his ballot on Saturday in favour of a new constitution that would considerably rein in his powers.

Africa's oldest leader appeared relaxed as he voted in Harare's Highfield township, flanked by his wife and daughter.

He urged Zimbabweans to ensure the referendum is carried out peacefully, amid allegations of kidnapping, beatings and two firebomb attacks.

“You can't go about beating people on the streets, that's not allowed, we want peace in the country, peace, peace,” Mugabe told reporters after he voted.

“Peace begins with Robert Mugabe,” he said.

The new constitution will curb some of the powers Mugabe has enjoyed during his 33-years in office.

It would limit him, and subsequent presidents to two five-year terms.

“If we vote 'yes' in this referendum it means our new constitution will have been made,” he said. - Sapa-AFP
