Quake shakes western Algeria

Algiers - A moderate earthquake shook a sparsely populated zone in western Algeria overnight, the country's public radio station announced on Friday.

Measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, the quake struck the region of Tiaret, 340km west of Algiers at 11:32pm local time (22h32 GMT), the radio said. It offered no indication of damage or possible victims.

Located on the crossroads of Eurasian and African tectonic plates, the northern part of Algeria is vulnerable to earthquakes, experts say. - Sapa-AFP
