Kinshasa - The spokesman for the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo says there has been a resurgence of rebel activity in the northeast where six people were killed and 47 kidnapped last week.

Lt. Col. Felix Prosper Basse said Wednesday that the Maimai-Simba group burned six people to death and abducted 40 women and seven boys from a northeastern village.

He said the rebels pillaged the village, which is seven days walk from the regional center of Mambasa.

Congo's northeast is a hotbed of separatist rebel activity as well as for the notorious Lord's Resistance Army, which is known for kidnapping children and using them as child soldiers.

The UN force has talked about cooperating with the Congolese military and the US African command, Africom, to move against rebels in this region.
