Ouagadougou - Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore fired the justice and human rights minister for ordering the beating and arrest of a mechanic following a traffic-related incident, local media said Friday.
Jerome Traore lost his job in an otherwise minor government reshuffle announced in a decree read on national television.
Adama Kema, a 32-year-old mechanic, told several newspapers he was beaten up by Traore bodyguards who picked him up and brought him to the minister's home following a minor traffic dispute.
After being beaten up, the mechanic said he was transferred to a police station. The minister used his influence to make sure he was locked up despite the police officers' reluctance, he said.
The incident comes almost exactly a year after Compaore's regime was rattled by a wave of popular protests following the death of a teenager in police custody. - Sapa-AFP
