SA concerned about Nigerian girls’ kidnap

Pretoria - The South African government expressed concern on Friday about the fate of schoolgirls kidnapped in Nigeria, the international relations department said.

The government condemned all forms of terrorism, in any form and from any quarter, spokesman Clayson Monyela said in a statement.

“The kidnapping of children in particular is condemned in the strongest terms and the South African government calls on the perpetrators of this heinous act to release the persons immediately and refrain from harming the kidnapped persons.”

The Associated Press reported on Friday that the number of Nigerian schoolgirls abducted on April 14 had officially risen to 276. Fifty-three of the girls had escaped from their captors, Islamic extremist group Boko Haram.

Monyela said the government called on African Union member states and the international community to support Nigeria in its battle against terrorism.
