South Africa has expelled Rwandan high commissioner to the Republic, Vincent Karega.

He and his two other envoys have been given 72 hours to leave the country.

The expulsions are in connection with the attempt on the life of exiled Rwandan General Kayumba Nyamwasa in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Rwanda has already expelled six South African envoys from Kigali in retaliation.

Last night Rwandan Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo tweeted: “We have expelled six S. African diplomats in reciprocity & concern at SA harboring of dissidents responsible for terrorist attacks in Rwanda.”

The tit-for-tat expulsions are likely to escalate a simmering diplomatic spat between the two countries that is linked to Rwanda’s targeting of South African-based Rwandan dissident. Kigali is suspected of masterminding the assassination of Rwanda’s exiled former intelligence chief Patrick Karegeya in Johannesburg last January.
