Pretoria - A SA National Defence Force (SANDF) soldier died and another was seriously wounded in an ambush in Sudan’s Darfur region on Sunday morning, the SANDF said.

SANDF members deployed in Sudan as part of the United Nations-African Union hybrid mission in Sudan, commonly known as the UN and AU Mission in Sudan (UNAMIS), repelled a deadly ambush staged by rebels in Darfur on Sunday morning, the SANDF said in a statement.

“However, it is with sadness [that we announce] that one member lost his life while another was seriously injured. Particulars of the deceased will be released once the family or next of kin have been informed.”

The minister of defence and military veterans, the chief of the SANDF, the chief of the joint operations division, and the chief of the SA Army all conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives, friends, and comrades of the deceased and wished the wounded soldier a speedy recovery.
