Bamako - Malian authorities on Friday declared a state of emergency throughout the country as the army launched a counter-offensive against Islamists who were pushing south.

The measure “takes effect immediately and over the entire national territory,” government minister Moussa Sinko Coulibaly told journalists. - Sapa-AFP
