Harare – A truck driver who worked on Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace’s dairy farm pleaded guilty this week to stealing from their company.

Tapiwa Manyone, 21, appeared before Harare magistrate Nomsa Sabarauta early Thursday and admitted he received and spent wages for four months after he had quit working for the dairy farm.

The Mugabes’ sophisticated, yet loss-making dairy farm is in the Mazowe district where Grace Mugabe has also built a hilltop mansion and has an expanding estate, all taken from white farmers since her husband’s landgrab began in 2000.

Manyone told the court he quit his job at the dairy last year in order to go and study. But his monthly salary of R3,600 continued to be deposited in his account for four months. He withdrew all that money in December and spent it.

He was remanded, pending the continuation of his trial.
