Johannesburg - An American woman’s African bush holiday came to an abrupt end when she was attacked and seriously injured by a giraffe.

Netcare 911 spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe said it happened at a Zambian holiday resort on Friday.

“The giraffe apparently used its head to attack the woman,” she said.

The woman, 59, who landed in a thorny bush, was left in a serious condition and rushed to a Zambian hospital. Netcare 911 was contacted to airlift her to Joburg for further treatment.

The Netcare 911 Jet Air ambulance, staffed by an emergency medical doctor, an emergency care practitioner and two pilots, collected the woman.

Mathe said their air ambulances were equipped as mobile intensive care units. She said it was the second time the particular giraffe had attacked a person.

“This is not the first we’ve flown to Zambia for the same sort of incident,” she said.
