Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade
Dakar - The ageing president of Senegal has attempted to divert attention from a growing opposition movement and show that he still has support in the streets of the capital by leading an impromptu rally through Dakar.
Reporters were told to come to the presidential palace for a meeting with President Abdoulaye Wade's spokesperson. Instead, the 85-year-old president showed up in person and invited reporters to follow his motorcade on Tuesday.
Several thousand people came out to see him in the capital's neighbourhoods, including Niari-Tally - which in recent days has been immobilised by protests calling for Wade's departure.
The crowds, however, were significantly smaller than Wade used to draw in years gone by.
