Johannesburg -

President Jacob Zuma will lead a delegation to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit, the international relations and co-operation department said on Wednesday.

“His Excellency President Jacob Zuma will lead a South African delegation to the SADC Extra-Ordinary Troika Summit to be hosted in Dar es Salaam, the United Republic of Tanzania, on January 10,” it said in a statement.

“South Africa in its capacity as the outgoing Chair of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation will participate in the Organ Troika Summit.”

Spokesman Clayson Monyela said the reports on the recent political and security developments in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Madagascar would be considered.

The Ministerial Committee of the Organ Troika would take place before the Troika Summit and its discussions would inform the decisions of the summit, he added.

Monyela said appraisals would be given on the latest developments on decisions implemented at the last Extra-Ordinary SADC Summit in December.

“SADC continues to serve as the primary vehicle for South Africa's foreign policy to achieve regional development and integration within Southern Africa,” Monyela said.

“South Africa has a vested interest in seeing the regional political and security situation improve, which will create positive conditions for the improvement of the quality of life of South Africans and SADC citizens in general.”

Zuma would be accompanied by International Relations and Co-operation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane. - Sapa
