Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma on Friday sent his condolences to the people of Zambia following the road accident that killed over 50 people near Lusaka.

“Our hearts go out to the families, relatives and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts are with the injured as we wish them a speedy recovery,” Zuma was quoted saying in a statement.

A bus carrying 73 passengers collided head-on with a truck north of Lusaka, killing 53 people, Agence France Presse reported on Thursday.

“South Africa joins the people of Zambia in mourning the loss of lives of more than fifty people during this unfortunate accident,” said Zuma.

A government official, quoted by AFP, described the accident as one of the country's worst.
