Washington - The panda cub born in August at the US National Zoo in Washington has started to take its first steps, the zoo said on Wednesday.

The zoo posted a two-minute video showing the fluffy white and black panda stretching her hind legs from underneath her body and standing up on all four legs.

“She hasn't gotten very far yet though,” the zoo said at its website. “She only takes a few steps before sitting back down and crawling.”

As the 4.7-kilogram cub becomes increasing more mobile, her mother Mei Xiang has started taking her out of the den for short forays into the indoor enclosures, the zoo said.

Her name will be announced December 1 after the results of a poll are released, the zoo said. So far more than 99 000 people have voted in the poll to determine her name. The poll will end on Friday.

Voters are choosing from five Chinese names: Bao Bao, which means precious or treasure in English; Ling Hua, meaning darling, delicate flower; Long Yun, which is a symbol of the dragon and the Chinese word for charming; Mulan, the name of a legendary, brave Chinese warrior from the 5th century; and Zhen Bao, which means treasure or valuable in English. - Sapa-dpa
