500-metre pizza for a good cause

Buenos Aires - Chefs in Argentina on Sunday prepared a 500m-long pizza to raise public awareness about Down syndrome, and raise money for the country's Down syndrome association.

The event, organised by the Association of Pizzeria and Empanada House Owners, aimed to promote the employment of people with the genetic disorder so as to help them tackle resulting challenges in daily life.

Hundreds of residents lined up along the capital city's central avenue Avenida de Mayo for a total of 20 000 slices of the pizza priced 30 pesos (about R28) for two slices, plus a beverage.

Some 750 kg of flour, 450 litrs of water, 750 kg of mozzarella cheese, 300 kg of ham, 300 litres of tomato sauce and 25,000 olives were used in the pizza making.

"I came in the past two years. It is for solidarity, and I would like to help, and the pizza is delicious," resident Catalina Deit said.
