Taking her first driving lesson in 1954, Valerie Christie might have imagined being free to hit the road alone in a matter of months.

As it turns out, however, it took her a touch longer to gain her licence - 58 years, to be precise.

The 74-year-old from Carlisle has finally passed her test.

She said: “I was first taught to drive in 1954 by a boyfriend but the relationship petered out and the driving stopped too.”

When a friend fell ill recently Mrs Christie decided to try again - finally passing her test at only the second attempt. She now wants to take the advanced test. - Daily Mail
