Strasbourg -

An Italian member of the European Parliament grabbed the spotlight at Wednesday's session when she showed up, voted, and took the floor, carrying her one-month-old baby girl in a sling.

Licia Ronzulli, a 35-year-old conservative whose baby was born on August 10, won a good round of applause as she got up to speak out on behalf of women.

“I am here symbolically with my daughter Vittoria to think of all those women who cannot reconcile serenely pregnancy and jobs, professional life and family life,” said the member of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's party.

“I would like to see more commitment on these issues from European institutions, to begin with the European Parliament, so that we can all lead these two lives well,” she added. - Sapa-AFP
