Copenhagen - One in four Danes believes in ghosts, according to a survey published on Wednesday.

While 27 percent of Danes surveyed said they believed in ghosts, 15 percent said they had experienced a ghost, the survey commissioned by the newspaper MetroXpress said.

"If people experience something that they have earlier heard in a ghost story it is natural (for them) to think that it is haunted," Tim Jensen, associate professor of the Institute for Philosophy, Education and the Study of Religions at the University of Southern Denmark, told the newspaper.

"People often give natural events a supernatural or religious meaning. Belief in ghosts is often connected to our notion of what happens after death. In that sense people are religious," he added.

Aarhus bishop Kjeld Holm, however, rejected any link between religion and belief in ghosts.
