Daryl Hannah wowed 1984 audiences as a mermaid with long, crimped tresses down to her waist in the film Splash.
Harare - Agovernment minister in Zimbabwe says work has stopped on new reservoirs because workers have been scared off by mermaids, a report has said.
According to orangenews.com, Minister of Water Resources Samuel Sipepa Nkomo reportedly told a parliamentary committee that terrified workers were refusing to return to the sites, near the towns of Gokwe and Mutare.
He said the only way to solve the problem was to brew traditional beer and carry out rites to appease the spirits.
“All the officers I have sent have vowed not to go back there,” Zimbabwe’s state-approved Herald newspaper quoted him as saying.
The senior politician allegedly said mermaids were also present in other reservoirs around the country.
The building of the reservoirs is long overdue, but is considered essential if Zimbabwe is to provide adequate water for its population and boost agricultural production.
The belief in mermaids and other mythical creatures is widespread in the country, where many people combine a Christian faith with traditional beliefs. – IOL

Christians believe in winged angels, talking burning bushes, holy ghosts, a pointy-tailed devil etc. Just how far off is this from believing in mermaids?

Instead of building dams they must build breweries! Because mermaids dont swim in beer. The other problem with beer is that the more beer you drink the higher the chance that you might see mermaids again!

why when it comes to black ttraditional beliefs does the white man jump in and discredits the black race's beliefs as satanic , moronic and in so doing laugh and mock it. we were told stories of creatures that turned into wolves, women that rode on broomsticks and a monster in a lake that has never been seen, a creature that lives in the snowy mountains with a huge foot. many of the 'white' folklores which are told today were , and of which some are, held in high esteem and are believed straight till this day. christianity in itself too ,initially, when adopted by the roman empire, merged both biblical and roman pagan traditions and beliefs. (do your research). i just wish that some of you can experience first hand encounters of the dark ish that goes on in africa before putting the gray matter of individuals who believe in these things into question. the bulk of black traditions is lost and is replaced by white traditions because of people looking down on black tradtion. there is the bad part in boh of these traditions (black & white) and no race should laugh or mock the other as a result of their traditions and or beliefs. before you mock and laugh, seek understanding because ignorance is highly contagious unless one seeks to learn more of things which they do not honestly know.

1. Anonymous posters chastising other anonymous posters for being anonymous? Very funny stuff! 2."You cannot believe in God if you do not believe in the devil as well" - Sorry anonymous...there are many different belief systems. Christianity isn't the only game in town. One CAN believe in God and not in the Devil...don't project your limited beliefs on others.

I don't know whats worse....The workers being afraid of a mythical creature or that their Minister of Water Resources thinks "beer" can solve the problem of the men not working, if anything wouldn't it do just the opposite? On a more humorous note...I never saw a mermaid when I drank beer, although all the women did get prettier.

So, where are the pictures. Not a single official took a camera when they went to check it out? I won't believe there are mermaids there until I see the pictures. I think they used it as an excuse to make beer. In this day and age, it's annoying to hear this kind of stuff without the visual back up.
