The dancers of Paris' famous Crazy Horse cabaret have gone on strike for more pay, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

The Crazy Horse, or Le Crazy as it is nicknamed, is one of the most famous of the French capital's cabarets, along with Le Moulin Rouge and Folies Bergere.

Founded in 1951, its Las-Vegas-style productions feature nude dancers but the shows focus more on aesthetics than the erotic.

The dancers, who voted on Monday to strike, told RTL radio their salaries “no longer correspondent to the burden of work demanded.”

“We're asked to work 24 days a month at a rate that is worse than pitiful,” one of the dancers said.

On Tuesday evening, they took their protest onto the street, meeting with customers who were queuing outside the club for the show to explain their grievances - with their clothes on.

The cabaret confirmed to dpa that it had been forced to cancel upcoming shows until further notice. - Sapa-dpa
