Pudding purists win Spotted Dick battle

Since time immemorial, Britain's irresistible combination of suet and raisins has been known as Spotted Dick.

Three years ago, a hospital trust decided that its patients' blushes needed to be spared and renamed the traditional pudding Spotted Richard. The Gloucestershire NHS Trust's lead was followed soon afterwards by the Tesco supermarket chain.

But by Tuesday both had conceded defeat and agreed to go back to the original.

The name Spotted Dick comes from the raisins that fleck the dish's surface. Dick is apparently a corruption of the word dough.

The news brought glee to members of the Pudding Club, set up 17 years ago to prevent the demise of traditional UK desserts. Chairperson Peter Henderson said: "We think that changing the name to Spotted Richard was totally ridiculous in the first place."
