London - Queen Elizabeth II is not known for her grasp of social media, but she tapped into a trend when she inadvertently photobombed an Australian athlete's selfie at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday.

Hockey player Jayde Taylor was posing for a photograph with a teammate when the 88-year-old British monarch moved into view in the background and appeared to be smiling over her shoulder.

“Ahhh The Queen photo-bombed our selfie!! #royalty #sheevensmiled #amazing,” Taylor wrote when she posted the picture on Twitter later in the day.

Within hours the photo had swept the internet, being retweeted at least 5 000 times.

Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip were touring venues at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday.
