LONDON: She met her fourth husband over the internet after sending out a desperate online plea for love. So perhaps the chances of a successful marriage were always slim.

This week Sinead O’Connor announced the end of her union with Barry Herridge – only 16 days after they said “I do” in a ceremony in Las Vegas. The singer, best known for her 1990 hit Nothing Compares 2 U, married the 38-year-old therapist on the evening of her 45th birthday on December 8, while sitting in the back of a pink Cadillac at The Little White Wedding Chapel.

She described the 10-minute ceremony as “too glorious for words”, while days before their wedding Herridge said: “I love Sinead more than anyone I have ever met.”

On Wednesday, however, the Irish star revealed the marriage had collapsed on Christmas Eve, blaming it on pressures placed on Herridge by “certain people in his life”.

In a statement posted on her website, she also appeared to put it down to her attempts to find some cannabis on their wedding night. She said: “Within three hours of the ceremony being over the marriage was kyboshed by the behaviour of certain people in my husband’s life. And also by a bit of a wild ride I took us on looking for a bit of a smoke of weed for me wedding night, as I don’t drink. My husband was… very badly effected [sic] by that experience and also by the attitude of those close to him toward our marriage… ”

O’Connor, who has four children from her previous relationships, married music producer John Reynolds in 1989 and journalist Nicholas Sommerlad in 2001. On July 22, 2010, she married long-time friend and collaborator Steve Cooney, but they split in April.

She then put an advert for a boyfriend on her Twitter site and wrote on her blog in August: “I am in the peak of my sexual prime and way too lovely to be living like a nun.”

Speaking about Herridge, the singer said: “Barry sent me this wonderful e-mail, which just took my heart away. It had to be him.” – Daily Mail
