London - A grandfather camped out on a windswept seafront for six days to secure a prized beach hut.

Keith Duell, 68, survived near-freezing temperatures to keep his place at the head of the queue.

His reward was to win the keys to the only beach hut on offer at Avon Beach, Christchurch, in Dorset, that came with a permanent lease.

His wife Christine visited him every day outside the beach’s administrative office to bring soup while other relatives came to his tent with evening meals of fish and chips and pizza.

Mr Duell paid £850 to use the 6ft by 4ft wooden hut from April to September. It will be his until he gives it up.

The farmer, from Burley in the New Forest, said: ‘Christine and I love it down here and our grandchildren often use the beach in the summer. We will get plenty of use out of it.’ - Daily Mail
